My Students for Patanjali Yogasutras

Yogasutras of Patanjali Web Series – Teaser

This Web Series is a sequence of 195 videos on the Yoga Sutras of Sage Patanjali. It is for beginners who want to be initiated into the study of Yoga Philosophy. Out of the 195 Yoga Sutras, you will be surprised to know that only 3 Sutras are dedicated to Asana and only 5 Sutras to Pranayama. Most of the Sutras are explicitly or implicitly meant to restraint the modifications of the mind and hence it is more of Psychology than Philosophy.
The inspiration to upload this videos comes from the fact that I have been immensely benefitted by its knowledge. My decision making abilities have improved and more importantly I have been able to keep stress at bay. Out of 195 Yoga Sutras about 90 + Sutras are easily applicable in everyday life. Hence it becomes necessary to take this text to the masses. With more than 90 % of ailments being psychosomatic it becomes an utmost necessity to know texts like this which gives us knowledge about the various tools to tame our mind.
It is said that:
25 % is what a teacher can teach us about any topic.
25 % is understood when one discusses the topic with friends,
25 % is understood with the passage of time and
25 % is understood when we teach others.
I hope my effort will help people lead a happy life. I am sure learning will be mutual here. Let the learning begin.

Patanjali Yogasutras – Samkhya Evolution Chart ‘Philosophy’ is a Greek word composed of two words ‘philo’ (love) and ‘sophia’ (wisdom). Therefore, ‘Philosophy’ is ‘love of wisdom’. Yoga has its foundation in Sāṃkhya philosophy. It is thus important to have a brief understanding of Indian Philosophy, to appreciate Yoga. Indian philosophy: Indian philosophy is divided into 2 main sub divisions: 1. Nāstika (Unorthodox): Nāstika branch consists of philosophies which do not believe in the authority of the Vedas. The main Nāstika philosophies are Buddhism, Jainism and Cārvākism. 2. Aāstika (Orthodox): Aāstika branch consists of 6 philosophies which believe in the authority of the Vedas. These six philosophies are together called as Ṣaḍ Darśana (6 visions/ insights). They are studied as twin systems, one being the theory and the other emphasizing on practice: a. Nyāya and Vaiśeṣika, b. Sāṃkhya and Yoga, c. Mīmāṁsā (also called as Pūrva Mīmāṁsā) and Vedānta (also called as Uttara Mīmāṁsā).

‘Sūtra’ is a Sanskṛt word that means “string”. In Indian literary traditions, it also denotes to an aphorism or a group of aphorisms in the form of a condensed text. Sūtras are a genre of ancient and medieval Indian texts. Its concise nature helped to teach and transmit ideas from one generation to the next. Sūtras were structured in a way that they could be easily communicated from the master to student, memorized by the recipient for discussion or self-study or as a reference. A Sūtra is therefore referred to as ‘mnemonic’ i.e. ‘easy to remember’.You can read the associated material for this video on my Blog – https://pravz.com/blog

Legend related to sage Patanjali’s birth:
Patañjali as a reincarnation of Śeṣanāga (Ādiśeṣa, the vehicle of Lord Viṣṇu) is mentioned in the salutation verse in the book written by Vācaspati Miśra.
It is said that Lord Viṣṇu was once seated on his couch (Ādiśeṣa, the Lord of Serpents) enjoying an enchanting dance performance by Lord Śiva. Lord Viṣṇu was so absorbed in the dance movements that his body began to vibrate to the rhythm of Lord Śiva. This vibration made him heavier and heavier causing a lot of discomfort to Ādiśeṣa who was by now gasping for breath. As soon as the dance came to an end, Lord Viṣṇu’s body became light again. Lord Ādiśeṣa was amazed with this sudden transformation and asked his master about the cause of these breathtaking changes. The Lord explained that grace, majesty and splendor of Lord Śiva had created an equivalent graceful vibration in his own body. Amazed at this, Ādiśeṣa professed a desire to learn dancing to enthrall his Lord.
Lord Viṣṇu predicted that soon Lord Śiva would bid Lord Ādiśeṣa to write a commentary on grammar and at that time he would also be able to dedicate himself to the art of dance. Lord Ādiśeṣa was overjoyed by these words and looked forward to the grace of Lord Śiva. He then began to meditate to find out who would be his intended mother. While meditating, he had the vision of a female Yoga adept and an ascetic, Gonikā who was praying for a worthy son to whom she could impart her wisdom. He realized that she would be a worthy mother for him and waited for an auspicious moment to become her son. Gonikā, thinking that her earthly life was approaching its end, had searched for a worthy son to whom she could transmit her knowledge. But she had found no one. When her penance had come to an end, she looked to the Sun God and prayed to him to fulfill her desire. She took a handful of water, as a final oblation to him, closed her eyes and meditated on the Sun.
She opened her eyes and looked at her palms as she was about to offer the water. To her surprise, she saw a tiny snake moving in her palms who soon took on a human form. This tiny male human prostrated to Yogini Gonikā and asked her to accept him as her son. Hence, she named him Patañjali. (‘Pata’ means fallen or falling and Añjali means palms folded in prayer)”. This is how Sage Patañjali is said to have come into this mortal world.

Yogasutras of Patanjali Web Series – Video 7

Samadhi Pada Sutra 1.1

अथ समाधिपादः
Atha SamādhiPādaḥ
अथ योगानुशासनम् ॥१.१॥
॥1.1॥ Atha Yogānuśāsanam
॥1.1॥ Now the discipline of Yoga (concentration) is explained.
 atha = now
 yoga = concentration
 anu = subsequent
 shaasanam = discipline

Practical Application of this Sutra:
Be aware of your minds contents. It helps us to keep it in the NOW. That way it always remains concentrated on the task at hand. Also Patanjali says that these concepts of Yoga existed during his time in pockets of various texts. He is thus not the founder of yoga but compiler of the Yogasutras. So the lesson we get here is do your work with a detached attitude and give it your best shot.

Yogasutras of Patanjali Web Series – Video 8

योगश्चित्तवृत्तिनिरोधः ॥१.२॥
॥1.2॥ YogaśCittaVṛttinirodhaḥ
॥1.2॥ Yoga is restraining the mind – stuff (Citta) from taking various forms (Vṛttis).
 yogaha = concentration
 chitta = mind- stuff
 vrutti = modifications
 nirodhaha = restraining

Practical Application of this Sutra:
Yoga is stopping the modifications of the mind. Easier said than done. Becoming aware of the contents of the mind is the first step to begin with. Then giving it an object to meditate is the next step which helps reduce the number of thoughts. Slowly senses are drawn inwards and the mind becomes calmer and peaceful. Remember, happiness is not objective but subjective. You gradually understand what it is to be in the now. Life becomes blissful.

Yogasutras of Patanjali Web Series – Video 9

तदा द्रष्टुः स्वरूपेऽवस्थानम् ॥१.३॥
॥1.3॥ Tadā draṣṭuḥ svarūpe avasthānam
॥1.3॥ Then the Seer is established in its own nature.
 tada = at the time of concentration
 drashtuhu = the seer
 svarupe = in its own nature
 avasthaanam = established
Practical Application of this Sutra:
When the mind is disinterested in the objective world, senses become jobless. Senses get drawn inwards. Mind realizes that “I am not a combo of body + mind+ intellect”.

Mind disconnects from consciousness and merges back to Prakriti. So Yoga is not union but the disconnection of Purusha (Consciousness) and Prakriti (Matter).
This can also be seen in sutra no 4.34. So the third sutra of the first chapter(1.3) and the last sutra of the last chapter (4.34) are connected.

Yogasutras of Patanjali Web Series – Video 10

वृत्तिसारूप्यमितरत्र ॥१.४॥
॥1.4॥ Vṛttisārūpyamitaratra
॥1.4॥ At other times the Self appears to assume the forms of the mental modifications.
 vrutti = modifications
 saarupyam = identification of nature
 itaratra = at other times

Practical Application of sutra no 1.4:

When our mind is not in Yoga, it becomes one with the outside objects and situations or starts tapping into memory. We try to find happiness in things and people, not realizing that happiness is subjective and not objective. We go through emotional ups and downs as we become one with the mental modifications. So become aware and nip the thought in the bud when it starts. Keep it focused to the work in hand.

वृत्तयः पञ्चतय्यः क्लिष्ट अक्लिष्टाश्चः ॥१.५॥
॥1.5॥ Vṛttayaḥ pañcatayyaḥ kliṣṭa akliṣṭāśca
॥1.5॥ The modifications of the mind are five-fold and are painful and non-painful.
 vruttayaha = these modifications are
 panchatayaha = five fold
 klishta = painful
 aklishtaaha = non-painful

Practical Application of Sutra no 1.5:

Sage Patanjali has categorised our innumerable fluctuations of mind into merely 5 categories. This gives us relief and hope that we can move from scattered to gathered to one pointed mind in this life time.

प्रमाणविपर्ययविकल्पनिद्रास्मृतयः ॥१.६॥
॥1.6॥ Pramāṇaviparyayavikalpanidrāsmṛtayaḥ
॥1.6॥ These five kinds of modifications are right knowledge, wrong knowledge, verbal delusion, deep sleep and memory.
 pramaana = right knowledge
 viparyaya = wrong knowledge
 vikalpa = verbal delusion
 nidra = deep sleep
 smritayaha = memory
Practical Application: All the five categories creates fluctuations in our mind. We must now be aware to check which category is dominant in us:
1. Whether we are seeking right knowledge.
2. Or are we influenced by wrong knowledge.
3. Or are we always in an imaginary world.

Arranged in four chapters {(Samadhi Pāda (51 Sutras), Sadhana Pada (55 Sutras), Vibhuti Pada (55 Sutras), Kaivalya Pada (34 Sutras)}, Patanjali Yoga Sutras bring out the basic essence of Yoga in short lines called Sutras.
Chanting in Sanskrit has a lot of benefits. A lot of research has been done to show various benefits of chanting in Sanskrit. It is also a process that helps study the Self.

1st chapter: Samadhi Pada
Samadhi Pada has 51 sutras.
What topics are mentioned in the first chapter i.e. Samadhi Pada?

So the complete vision of a Yogi is highlighted in the first chapter. You will also know that Yoga is not Asana and Pranayama only. The best part after knowing a text in totality, especially the Yogasutras (195 aphorisms) is that, since we know the complete contents of the text we can never be fooled in the name of the text.
Also it helps in contemplating because only when knowledge is used in the day to day life, it becomes wisdom. I always believe that once you know the Yogasutras in totality stress will be a thing of past.

4th chapter: Kaivalya Pada
Kaivalya Pada has 34 sutras. It is the smallest chapter.
What topics are mentioned in the fourth chapter i.e. Kaivalya Pada?
• One important point to note is that once we understand the fourth chapter well we can understand the earlier part as also the entire PYS in a better light.
• The peak of Samadhi i.e. Dharma Megha Samadhi is defined in this chapter (PYS IV- S: 29). It can be inferred here that nothing less than Para Vairāgya is necessary for the Yogi to be disinterested even in Omniscience. One is now made to appreciate fully PYS I- S: 12, wherein Patanjali had said that Abhyasa and Vairagya should develop together.
• PYS IV- S: 31 seems to validate the teaching of Indian philosophy that knowledge is within us. Only it has to manifest. So when the covering or veil of impurities on knowledge is removed on the attainment of infinite knowledge, very little remains to be known.
• In PYS IV- S: 32 we can get a validation of Satkaryavada that nothing is destroyed. Gunas don’t get destroyed in the end. Only Parinama and Krama stops i.e. their modifications and sequencing stop.
• PYS IV- S: 34 is a super end to this text wherein both the perspectives i.e. the points of view of Purusha as well as Prakriti are displayed.
